Duna-Dráva Nemzeti Park
Pécs • Parks
The 50,000-hectare game reserve of Gemenc is the best floodplain area in Hungary. With the many dead river arms, inlets and islands, this protected area gives an idea of how the Danube, before regulation looked: old willows, giant oaks, poplars and lilies of dale. The lovely islands are populated by blue herons, eagles, black storks, egrets, waterfowl and deer with the most beautiful antlers of the country. The protected area can only by boat or by train from Bárányfok to Pörböly be visited. In the area lie also the caves of Abaliget and the memorial to the Battle of Mohács.
