Description

On the Buda side of the Danube in Budapest, Gellért Hill rises to a height of 235 metres, with the Statue of Liberty standing at its summit. This monument, which forms an important part of Budapest?s cityscape, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

The thermal springs that feed the surrounding baths are located within Gellért Hill, and the Mátyás, Rákóczi and Árpád springs also played a significant role in the formation of the caves. The most famous cave on the hill is St. Ivan?s Cave, which houses the chapel of the Order of St. Paul, also known as St. Gellért?s Rock Church. This cave is only partially natural, as new passages were added at the beginning of the 20th century to turn it into a rock church, modelled on the cave in Lourdes.

Gellért Hill is a wonderful destination where walkers looking for unique sights can explore places such as St Gellért Waterfall or the Philosophers? Quarter, where statues of Buddha, Gandhi and Jesus stand beneath shady trees. And at the lookout rock, you can witness the meeting between Prince Buda and Princess Pest.
